Reps issue TCN ultimatum to complete Kano power projects

The House of Representatives Committee on Power has tasked the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to ensure completion of two power substation projects in Kano State, within four months.

The projects include 2/40 MVA and 3/30 KVA substations in Walalambe and Rimin-Zakara communities of Nasarawa and Ungogo Local Government Areas of the state.

The Chairman of the Committee, Magaji Da’u, gave the charge during an oversight visit of the Federal Government’s power projects, on Friday in Kano.

Da’u said the 2/40 MVA Walalambe power project initiated in the past 15-years was designed to enhance energy supply to Dakata industrial area and its environs.

While the 3/30 KVA Rimin-Zakara substation project would address epileptic power supply and enhance distribution in Kano metropolis.

He said: “We are in Kano to inspect power projects as instructed by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, sequel to complaints by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), and also member representing Nasarawa Federal Constituency, Ali Ahmed over the abandoned power projects in the state.

“Therefore, the project must be completed by December 1, and we are going to do everything possible at the National Assembly to ensure that funds are provided.’’

According to him, the projects will add value to power supply and distribution in the state, especially with the Siemens project on the way.

Da’u reiterated the commitment of the lawmakers to provide enabling legislations to fast track speedy completion of the power projects for sustainable social and economic development in the country.

“TCN is handling over N156 billion uncompleted power projects in the country. We are committed to ensuring completion of the affected projects,’’ he said.

In his response, Mr Muhammad Kamar, Assistant General Manager, TCN Kano Service, said that work on the Walalambe substation had resumed after it was abandoned in the past 16-years.

Kamar added that the offshore materials for the Walalambe substation were 100 per cent ready.

While commending the committee for its support, Kamar assured the readiness of the company to ensure completion of the projects within the stipulated time.

Also speaking, Mr David Omoleye, KEDCO’s Chief Technical Officer,  noted that completion of the projects would address the energy crisis as well as improve the social and economic wellbeing of the people of the state. (NAN)
