Stallion Times trains journalists, emphasizes adherence to ethical standards

Stallion Times Media Services has trained 40 journalists on the code of ethics and moral issues in journalism practice in Kano State

The organization said the initiative is an effort to enhance professionalism in media practice through adherence to professional code of ethics for journalists.

In a remark, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano state Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim urged journalists to improve their professionalism for a better media practice.

Abbas who emphasized the need for training and retraining of journalists in improving their efficiency, also charged them in upholding and adhering to the professional ethics and code of conduct while discharging their duties.

He stated this on Friday at a one-day training workshop for journalists with the  theme: ‘Code of Ethics for Journalists’, organised by Get Involved, Dialogue and Improve Project – (GDRIP) held in Kano.

In his welcome address, the Project Coordinator and Editor-in-Chief, Stallion Times Media Services, Mr. Isiyaku Ahmed stated that, the training is to build the capacity of journalists and stakeholders on investigative reporting, ethics, safety, media literacy, and sustainability among others.

On his part, the guest speaker, Mallam Adamu Ladan gave a detailed explanation to the participants on the various code of conducts, characteristics of a journalist, challenges, ethical issues, as well as recommendations on steps towards upholding professional ethics and code of conduct.

“Upholding the ethical codes of journalism is the only assurance that will enhance the integrity of the Nigerian media, pointing out that, the integrity of the profession is determined by the level of adherence to the ethical standards of the practitioners” Mallam Adamu clarified.

Solacebase reports that the project is in collaboration with the Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) under the Collaborative Media Project working to improve media independence and government accountability, funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

The collaboration is looking to build the capacity of journalists on investigative reporting, ethics, safety, media literacy for other stakeholders, provoke conversations on media independence, and social justice, and amplify the voices of marginalized groups.
