Court convicts energy theft offender in Kano

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), through the Special Investigation and Prosecution Taskforce on Electricity Offences (SIPTEO) says it recorded a boost in the fight against energy theft in its franchise.

According to KEDCO Management, SIPTEO arraigned one Mu’ammar Aliyu Getso, alongside his younger brother, Suleiman Aliyu Getso who is now at large for stealing 5,500 KWH of energy valued at over N100,000

A Magistrate Court number 63, sitting at Hajj Camp, Kano convicted Mu’ammar Aliyu Getso, a resident in Janbulo on two count charges of criminal conspiracy and energy theft.

This was contained in a statement issued by Head, Corporate Communications, KEDCO, Ibrahim Sani Shawai, on Thursday.

‘’Giving her judgment shortly after the convict pleaded guilty to the offence, the Presiding Judge, Sakina Amina Yusuf said the offence is punishable under section 97 subsection 286 subsection 2 of Panel code Law of Kano State, adding that the defendant will pay KEDCO the sum of N101,250.00 or spend one year in prison,’’ said the statement.

‘’She further added that the defendant will also pay the sum of N20,000 as fine or spend the six months in prison.’’

‘’Reacting to the judgement, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, with the Special Investigation and Prosecution Taskforce on Electricity Offences (SIPTEO) Kano Branch, Aliyu Bamalli revealed that the convict had consumed electricity for 15 months without payments, he further charges all and sundry to shy away from energy theft or faces the wrath of the law.’’

‘’The Management herewith calls on those nursing and are in the business of vandalism, energy and power equipment theft and other criminal tendencies to deviate from such act before the law catches up with them.’’
