Court orders Kano PPRO to pay N1m damages to blogger, over unlawful arrest, torture

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Thursday ordered the Kano Police Command, Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, to pay N1million damages in favour of a blogger and social media influencers activist, Bashir Galadanchi.

It could be recalled that in September 2019,  Galadanchi, a blogger and posted on his Facebook wall in the Hausa language, the expression “Tsintacciyar Mage bata mage”, which literally means “lost-but-found cat is no cat” -an expression which the PPRO took as being personally hauled against him

Hence he was arrested and detained for 5 days and tortured at the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS cell on the orders of the police spokesman for criticizing him and the Nigeria Police Force on Facebook.

In his judgement on Thursday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu condemned the actions of the PPRO, the officer in charge of the defunct SARS Uba Bangajiya and others involved in the brutality and harassment.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu similarly ordered them to tender a public apology to the applicant in addition to a restraining injunction from arrest, detention or any kind of intimidation.
