VIDEOS: Army, police foil jailbreak attempt at Ikoyi prison

A section of Ikoyi Correctional Center in Lagos was under attack with smoke billowing from the building and gunshots heard.

In a video which was shared on social media by eyewitnesses, inmates can be seen running and trying to escape.

However, Policemen and soldiers who were deployed to the prison to backup security on the ground prevented what looks like a jailbreak attempt.

An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous said, “I can see them from my balcony at the moment. Soldiers and policemen have arrived. I saw prisoners throwing stones and I saw fire.
“A lot of the prison officials have gathered at the entrance of the prison while some of the inmates have retreated.”

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Spokesman in Lagos, Rotimi Oladokun said there was no cause for alarm, as the situation is under control.

According to him: “There was a fire on a part of the correctional centre but it has been contained. It did not affect the inmates in any way. There is no jailbreak and all is fine. We will issue a statement soon.”
