In a letter signed by Professor Umar Pate, the Chairman of the Faculty MacArthur Scholarship Grant Implementation Committee, two million seven hundred and fifty thousand naira (N2.750,000,00) was paid to the students.
Professor Umar Pate in the letter , indicated that the beneficiaries were selected based on their academic performance and peculiar financial needs, as stipulated by the letter of the grant.
Solacebase recalled that during the tenure of Professor Umar Pate as the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Communication, the Department of Mass Communication was given a grant worth $750,000 by the MacArthur Foundation to be executed in three years on training personnel of the Department in the area of investigative journalism, including public lecture, conferences, seminars and a component of female scholarship of 30 students every academic session beginning from 2016/2017 session for a period of three years.
According to BUK Bulletin, the scholarship awards are for the academic sessions 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, which are the Year One and Year Two of the scholarship period and that the last batch of the beneficiaries would emerge after the first semester examination of the 2018/2019 academic session.
A total of 30 undergraduate students were awarded the scholarship in 2016/2017 while in the 2017/2018 session the scheme also included some female postgraduate students.
