Bayero University Creates Educational Trust Fund For Indigent Students

Bayero University Kano, BUK, in collaboration with Students Union Government, SUG, of the institution, has established a Students’ Educational Trust Fund to support students in financial difficulties.

This is contained in the monthly publication of the University ‘BUK TODAY ‘which was made available to newsmen in Kano on Friday.

According to the publication, the idea behind the introduction of the Fund was informed by the desire to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to continue with his or her studies on account of non-payment of stipulated registration fees.

It explained that the desire of the university is to minimise the number of those students who discontinued their studies due to inability to meet basic financial requirements as well as give equal opportunities to all and sundry.

“The idea is part of a deliberate policy aimed at assisting students with genuine cases in need of financial support.

It further explained that under the arrangement, each registered student of the University would contribute N200 during the annual registration, which would be deposited into a special account to take care of students with peculiar problems.

“Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have already consented to be part of the contributors to the Fund,” the magazine said.

It said the project would go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the target students, considering the frequent requests for the suspension of studies by some students facing financial difficulties.

“It was discovered that majority of indigent students failed to continue with their studies due to financial difficulties which make it extremely impossible for them to pay registration fees.

“For others, even after paying the registration fees they had nothing to spare for accommodation, let alone to have extra money for their daily sustenance or books during the semester,” it said.
