The Independent National Electorate Commission (INEC) panel investigating alleged underage voting in the last Kano Council poll on Thursday requested the Kano state Independent Electoral Commission KANSIEC to produce voters registration lists used in five polling units in the state.
The panel equally demanded full list of accredited civil society groups and observers that monitored the election.
The centers specifically requested for investigation were Sawuchi ward, Kano Municipal area 21, Gama area 2, Nassarawa area 31 and Gezawa area 3.
The INEC panel that arrived at the state headquarters of KANSIEC at exactly 2.10pm led by its chairman Alh. Abubakar Nahuche was received by KANSIEC Chairman Prof. Garba Ibrahim Sheka who ushered them to the commission’s conference room.
Sooner after the panel settled for business, Chairman of KANSIEC restated the readiness to provide all necessary documents to substantiate the credibility of the February 10 council poll in the state.
Prof. Sheka however requested for secret session devoid of media coverage for investigation that lasted 1 hour.
Speaking with journalists shortly after Abubakar hinted that the panel requested for vital documents relevant to the conduct of the council poll to enable the panel validity the credibility of the voter’s registration.
Reacting to while the panel admitted to the request for close door meeting with KANSIEC, the Chairman of the panel who is also the INEC commissioner in-charge of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina maintained that there was no deliberate attempt to black out the media from its proceedings.
“ Everything is going to be open in fact we are also holding another meeting you can call it secret meeting with the media tomorrow Friday where everybody will be given the opportunity to speak and react to issue bordering the council election so there is no secret meeting anywhere”. Abubakar revealed.
Explaining while he requested for close door session with the panel, Prof. Sheka revealed that “ Is not a secret meeting per say. After the courtesy call I gave a lecture where I made a presentation about the controversial footage that went viral but I want them to carefully study the power point presentation which I can also made available to the public”, insisted that it wasn’t conceptualized to negative impression.
Although, Prof Sheka insisted that KANSIEC is absolutely independent under section 197 of the constitution to conduct election without interference or subset to INEC, he noted that the commission will accord maximum support to INEC to executive the national issue.
The KANSIEC chairman who expressed satisfaction on the outcome of the meeting was optimistic that the outcome of the investigation will further prevent future electoral fraud.
He posited that the commission has clearly proved to veracity all the pictures on the underage voting through software which he said had proved to be internet fraud. He insisted that such footage if not detected earlier, similar pictures will be used to perpetrate similar fraud in 2019 general election.
The 8 member committee was constituted by Chairman of INEC Prof. Yakubu Mohmud to investigate the alleged underage voting in Kano during the last council election.
